WebSpec Privacy Policy
Overview
WebSpec is a browser extension that helps you inspect, extract, and preview elements on webpages for design and development work.
WebSpec does not operate servers and does not collect personal information for storage or marketing. All features run locally in your browser and only when you choose to activate them.
What information WebSpec accesses
When you click the WebSpec icon or use the keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+W), the extension may access content from the current browser tab only, including:
- Page HTML, CSS, and text
- Images, SVG, video, and media URLs shown on the page
- Element size, color, typography, spacing, and layout information
- Screenshots when you use the Capture feature
- The URL of the page you are viewing
WebSpec does not access tabs you have not activated the tool on.
What WebSpec does not collect
WebSpec does not collect, store, or transmit:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or other personally identifiable information
- Payment or financial information
- Health information
- Login credentials or authentication cookies for its own use
- Browsing history across sites or tabs
- Data for advertising, analytics, or monetization
WebSpec has no user accounts and no analytics.
How information is used
Information from the current tab is used only to provide these user-facing features:
- Inspect — show element details while you hover
- Copy Asset — copy text, images, colors, HTML, CSS, and related content you select
- Edit — adjust text, colors, layout, and layers on the page locally
- Responsive — preview the page at different device sizes
- Capture — save a screenshot to your device or clipboard
All processing happens on your device. WebSpec does not send page content to WebSpec or any third-party servers.
Network requests
WebSpec may make network requests only to fetch assets (such as images) from the websites you are viewing. This happens when you use extract or copy features and is needed to build clipboard content. These requests go to the same sites you are already visiting, not to WebSpec servers.
Any network communication uses HTTPS when the target website supports it.
Storage and retention
WebSpec does not persistently store your browsing data, page content, or extracted items on external servers.
Temporary in-memory state (such as whether inspect mode is active on a tab) is cleared when you close the tab, close the toolbar, or disable the extension.
Content you copy goes to your clipboard. Files you save go to your downloads folder. Those remain under your control on your device.
Sharing with third parties
WebSpec does not sell, rent, or share user data with third parties.
WebSpec does not use data for advertising or profiling.
Your choices and control
You control when WebSpec runs:
- Click the WebSpec toolbar icon to open or close the tool
- Toggle Inspect, Copy Asset, Edit, and Responsive on or off
- Press Esc to close panels
- Disable or uninstall the extension at any time in your browser’s extension settings
WebSpec only reads page content while the tool is active and you are using it.
Children’s privacy
WebSpec is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect any changes. Continued use of WebSpec after changes means you accept the updated policy.
